Action Physiotherapy Reacts to Growing Evidence of Long-Lasting, Damaging Effects of Text Neck

Text neck is also becoming increasingly common, as the vast majority of people aged 18-44 are virtually never without their cell phones. The problem with text neck is that people are always looking down, which puts a lot of stress on the neck; in fact, looking down at a mobile device is equivalent of putting a 60-pound weight on the neck. Symptoms of text neck include chronic headaches, upper back pain, shoulder pain, neck pain, and increased curvature of the spine. “Text neck does not occur simply from texting; after all, people have looked down to read for centuries. Texting is just one more activity that causes us to look down and puts additional stress on the neck and spine,” Kappes adds. “These added stressors can lead to early wear and tear and degeneration. It is particularly disconcerting for young, growing children, since this could cause permanent damage to their spines as they grow.”


“The problem with texting is that the phone’s user is always looking down. To prevent the long-term physical damages related to text-neck, people should hold their smartphones at eye level. As for posture, the neck muscles are not designed to be tipped forward for prolonged periods of time; align the ears with the shoulders and keep the shoulders back,” Kappes concludes. “For those that suffer from text neck or poor posture, the registered, university-trained physiotherapists at Action Physiotherapy will develop an individualized treatment plan that includes a combination of education, a detailed digital posture scan, postural awareness exercises and hands on treatment techniques.”
